Retaking the journeyman exam: delays and rules

If you did not reach 60%, you can sit the exam again. Here is what the CCQ says about the delay, the new version and the scores that are kept.

Updated October 17, 2026

The delay before a retake

The delay is 3 to 10 months. It is set by section 9 of the Regulation respecting vocational training of the workforce in the construction industry and depends on how many apprenticeship periods you have done in the trade and on your score. For holders of an apprentice certificate, it may be expressed in work hours rather than months.

A different version, every section

The retake is a different version of the exam. Versions aim for the same difficulty and the same competencies, and every section is assessed again.

Consolidated scores

Since 2020, the CCQ generally keeps your better score for each section across your two attempts. After a major change to the exam (new technology, new code), the first retake is not consolidated: only the new attempt counts.

The carpenter-joiner information sheet changed on 4 August 2026. If you failed before that date, ask the CCQ whether your retake will be consolidated.

What the CCQ does not state

The fee for a retake and the maximum number of attempts do not appear on the CCQ page about retakes. Check them with the CCQ before you register.

Preparing for the retake

The simulation’s report by section shows where your weak spots are. With consolidated scoring, each section counts separately: targeted work pays off most there.

These rules summarize the CCQ page on retaking the qualification exam. They can change: always check with the CCQ before you register.
